Hi all – as noted in this announcement, we’ve switched the site over to free registration. All you need to do to access the site’s content (around 8,000 educational resources!) is fill in the form on our Registration page. As part of this change, we cancelled all recurring payments for membership on out PayPal account earlier this evening; if you’ve received a message about this from PayPal in email and were wondering about it, don’t worry – it was deliberate.
If you have recently taken a membership with us at the old price of £1 per year and would like us to refund this payment the please let us know – you can find a contact form and two email addresses for us on the Contact Us page.
We’re still looking at other ways we might be able to use to help us finance the site – unfortunately using a “Donate” button won’t work for us owing to extra requirements and charges from PayPal, so we’re looking in to alternatives.
In the meantime – enjoy the site!
UPDATE: We’ve enabled comments on this post, so feel free to give us your thoughts!
This update is a heads-up to you all that we’ll shortly be removing the present £1 annual fee for Lesson Library! As a Social Enterprise we have always planned to do as much as we can to help people all over the world, and this seems to be the best way to do it.
We hope that you agree that £1 is not much to have paid for the resources on the site; given our present membership numbers we don’t even cover our hosting costs (presently about £1200 a year!), and we’ve been covering the shortfall out of our own pockets since before the site went live. Despite this, if you have recently taken out a membership and would like us to refund the £1 charge please let us know – two email addresses and a form to get in touch with us are on the Contact Us page.
We will shortly be going through all of our existing payment agreements and cancelling the recurring part of all of them, so no further payments should be taken from you. We’re told that the PayPal system will automatically email you when the agreement is cancelled, so keep an eye open for this in the near future.
Before anyone asks – yes, we did look at asking people for voluntary donations, however as this would attract higher fees from PayPal (we’re not a registered charity) we decided against this option. Donations can still be made to our PayPal account, of course, but we cannot use the handy button you may have seen elsewhere without incurring an extra monthly charge. (We did have one idea, which was to create e-book compendiums of material from the site and then charge a low fee to access them either individually or as a set; let us know what you think, please!)
- We’re going to stop charging for the site
- Refunds of recent membership fees are available on request
- We will be cancelling any existing recurring payments in PayPal
Looking to the future, we’re planning to leave the site up and running until the middle of next year at least; exactly when depends on how well another (offline) educational project goes, as well on whether we can maintain the site’s performance with a lower-cost hosting service.
